FENDI’S HISTORY
Founded at: Rome, Italy
Year: 1925
Headquarters: Rome, Italy
Fendi was founded in Rome, Italy in 1925 by married couple Adele Casagrande Fendi and Edoardo Fendi, originally as a fur and leather shop. Adele Fendi came up with several innovative ideas for their leather bags which were hand made by local artisans.
By 1932 they opened a boutique at a location in Rome commonly visited by international tourists. The quality of their bags as well as the original designs helped them gain recognition internationally.
They had five daughters and after 20 years in business their daughters joined them in the business, each one having specific assignments to help grow the company and splitting ownership at 20% each.
In 1966 they brought German designer Karl Lagerfeld as lead designer, he worked with them for 54 years.
Thanks to the contributions of Lagerfeld the company went from a small leather and fur store to a globally relevant luxury fashion house.
Lagerfeld introduced the double “F” logo for the company which had a double meaning, it was meant for Fendi but also for “Fun Furs” because he had multiple ideas to first take furs outside the traditional applications like coats and implement them in many other clothing items and fashion accessories as well as making them more colorful and used as simple accents for some items.
He made fur affordable to a larger segment of the fashion market, at the time fur was seen as something just for the elites, he included fur in a wide range of products with price points far lower than the typical for fur coats.
In 1977 Fendi introduced their first ready-to-wear collection.

In 1985 Fendi introduced their first fragrance for women.
In 1988 Fendi introduced their first fragrance for men.
In 1992 , third generation Fendi family member Silvia Venturini Fendi (granddaughter of Adele Casagrande Fendi) started working in the design department under Karl Lagerfeld. She created 2 of the most famous bags lines from Fendi, the Baguette (1997) and the Peekabo (2008).
The Baguette bag was named after Silvia noticing how women in Paris put their baguettes (bread) under their arms, she designed a bag that could comfortably carry a loaf of bread.
In the 1990s, thanks to the Baguette bag, Fendi became known for its bags (it had been known before mostly for fur products). And in 1998 the character “Carrie Bradshaw” played by Sarah Jessica Parker in the iconic for fashionistas TV series Sex & The City regularly used a baguette bag and in one episode she said the famous line: “It’s not a bag, it’s a Baguette” making the bag a must have accessory for fashionistas worldwide.
Due to its tremendous popularity, the Baguette bag was extensively copied by other brands and Fendi discontinued it in the in early 2000s but it has been recently revived in 2019.
In 2020 a British designer named Kim Jones became Artistic Director at Fendi, becoming the first person other than Karl Lagerfeld or someone from the Fendi family in that position.
In 2024 Kim Jones stopped working for Fendi and was replaced by Maria Grazia Chiuri as Chief Creative Director.
FENDI’S OWNERSHIP
From 1925 to 1999 Fendi was solely owned by the Fendi family and their heirs.
In 1999 the controlling stake of Fendi (51%) was sold by the Fendi family heirs to a joint venture of Prada and Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy (LVMH), the largest luxury goods conglomerate in the world. Later Prada (in 2002) sold its part of that deal to LVMH and also in 2002 LVMH acquired another 15.9% of the company from am ember of the Fendi family.
Fendi today is one of the most recognizable and prestigious names in Italian fashion. It is a top 5 name in high luxury fashion in Italy and top 20 worldwide.
