Dolce & Gabbana (also known as D & G) is a firm founded by Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana. Domenico Dolce grew up in a family who owned a clothing business and Stefano Gabbana’s mother was a laundry service worker and her father worked in a printing factory. They met in Milan in 1980 while working for the Italian fashion brand Giorgio Corregiari. In 1982 they decided to open a fashion design consulting firm named Dolce & Gabbana.
In 1985 they debuted their own first women’s collection under their firm’s name at the new talent’s section of the Milan Fashion Week. A year after, in 1986 they opened their first store in Milan.
Their first two years in business were very difficult, they struggled to gain traction both as designers and with their collections. But by 1987 the name was gaining recognition. In 1989 they expanded their collections to offer underwear and swimwear.
By their fourth collection Dolce had used some of his Sicilian roots to give a unique touch to their creations, they even used Sicilian locations and emulated the cinema style of the 1940s for their campaigns. One of their dresses in that collection became iconic of the image of the Dolce & Gabbana and is now considered by experts ad one of the 100 most important dresses ever designed.
In 1989 they had their first fashion show in Japan and in 1990 they had their first fashion show in New York. Also in 1990 they opened their first woman’s boutique in Milan.
By 1990 the company had a significant following outside of Italy, exporting to the United States and Japan.
By 1991 they created their first men’s collection.
In 1993 they partnered with Madonna designing over 1500 costumes for her tour. That same year they won an award with one of their women’s perfumes.
In 1994 they launched the D & G brand.
In the 2000 the firm was highly recognized and prestigious and they worked with many global artists like Madonna, Missy Elliott, Mary J. Blige, Whitney Houston and Kylie Minogue.
In the 2000s Dolce & Gabbana had become very influential in fashion and music. They even designed the official suits of AC Milan the football soccer team.
In 2006 they began to offer leather goods for men and women.
In 2009 they launched their makeup line.
From 2010 to 2025 Dolce & Gabanna has consolidated as one of the most influential and important names in Italian fashion. With constant innovations and creative ways to collaborate with artists, sports teams, and multiple companies.
Today Dolce & Gabbana’s name is synonymous with Mediterranean flare and cachet and high design. It is one of the most recognizable and prestigious names from Italy.
