BALMAIN’S HISTORY

Balmain was founded by Pierre Balmain in 1945 in paris, France.
Pierre Balmain’s mother and his aunt owned a fashion boutique and after is father’s death he often worked there. He attended the École des Beaux-Arts in 1933, to study architecture but instead spent most of his time designing dresses. During that time he worked for Robert Piquet as a freelance artist and left school to work for Edward Molyneux.
He had to serve at the French air force during the period of World War II, after peace was declared he went to work for Lucien Lelong and in 1945 he opened his own fashion house Pierre Balmain S.A.
After World War II Pierre Balmain was considered fashion royalty in France and he designed outfits for some of the biggest stars at the time and for royalty and first ladies around the world.
Pierre Balmain died in 1982.
After his death Balmain’s assitant and right hand man Erik Mortensen took over the lead of the company and recruited Peggy Huynh Kinh for the artistic direction of the women’s ready-to-wear and home accessories.
Erik Mortensen left in 1990, and Hervé Pierre took over as director of ready-to-wear and haute couture until 1992.
In 1993 Oscar de la Renta took over the direction until 2002.
After Oscar de la Renta the firm was in bad financial health almost going into bankruptcy.
In 2004 Alain Hivelin took over the business direction of the company. With him came a number of changes in how the company operated and he hired Christopher Decarnin in 2005 as head designer.
Christopher Decarnin brought the brand into the 21st century. He changed the brand’s reputation for classic and luxurious designs to more pricey and flashy designs.
In 2011 Olivier Rousteing who had worked under Roberto Cavalli was brought to replace Christopher Decarnin. He wanted the collections to go back to a the finer aspects of French couture and he added an Asian influence to the designs.
On June 22, 2016, Mayhoola Investments from Qatar acquired Balmain.
Nowadays Balmain offers: Ready-To-Wear, Bags, Shoes and Accessories. Their products are aimed at the mid luxury fashion segment.
Balmain is a name with very good recognition and prestige, worn by celebrities and the rich and famous around the world..
