DESCRIPTION: Elizabeth Arden was founded in 1910 by Florence Nightingale Graham (born in Canada in 1878). When young, she dropped out of nursing school, but while she was a nurse she envisioned the creams used for medical treatments could actually be used for beauty purposes, from an early age she began experimenting at her kitchen-turned laboratory at home. She believed she had a higher mission in life than having a regular life and a family at a young age, she was trying to have her own cosmetics business and become a business woman.

At the age of 30 she decided to join her brother in New York City. There she got a job as a bookkeeper for a pharmaceutical company and that gave her an opportunity to often visit their labs and start learning about skincare at a professional lab. She then worked as a treatment girl for a beauty culturist named Eleanor Adair, one of the premier beauty gurus of the time.

In 1909, with $1,000 she had saved, decided to partner in beauty salons with another beauty culturist named Elizabeth Hubbard but the partnership dissolved quickly. The salons used the name “Elizabeth” so in order to avoid hassles related to changing names she decided to keep the name Elizabeth and got a trademark combining it with the name of a nearby farm named “Arden”. The name “Elizabeth Arden” was born and for the rest of her life, she was associated with that name (people thought her name was Elizabeth Arden).

2 years after founding Elizabeth Arden she traveled to Paris to learn about techniques for beauty and facial massages and created a few products she brought to her salons in the USA.

By 1915 she started opening beauty salons in different cities around the world. Before dying in 1966 she had already opened more than 100 beauty salons all over the world. She had created a beauty, skincare, and fragrance empire and she had become one of the most prominent and wealthy women of her time.

When young, she believed regular women would like to use makeup to enhance their beauty (at the time makeup was not seen as mainstream and was known to be worn by prostitutes and low-class women), she is credited for making the use of makeup proper and popular among middle and high-class women.

Today, Elizabeth Arden is owned by Revlon, Inc.
